Sourcing & Quality
Where is your matcha sourced from?
All of our matcha is 100% single-origin, harvested from historic tea estates in Uji, Kyoto, which is the birthplace of Japanese green tea. Our leaves are extended shade-grown, picked during the first spring harvest (ichiban-cha), and stone-milled in small batches to preserve peak freshness, vibrant color, and smooth umami.
What cultivars do you use in your matcha?
We offer both single-cultivar teas, which highlights the distinct natural taste of a single tea plant, as well as carefully crafted blends.
Our blends use rare tea plant varieties like Samidori, Okumidori, and Yabukita. Each blend is created by our award-winning tea master, who works directly with family farms in Kyoto that have been growing tea for generations. Our partner farmers are among the most respected in Japan and have won top national honors, including the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award.
Are your teas tested for heavy metals and purity?
Yes. Quality and safety are foundational to our brand. Every batch is rigorously tested for radiation, heavy metals, and agricultural chemical residues to ensure compliance with strict food safety standards before leaving Japan.
Is your matcha organic, gluten-free, and vegan?
Our matcha is 100% pure, single-ingredient green tea leaf powder. They are naturally vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, and free from artificial colors or preservatives. While our partner farms practice sustainable and organic farming techniques, certain small-batch micro-lots maintain traditional Japanese cultivation methods focused on pinnacle flavor rather than mass organic certification.
Preparation & Care
How should I store my matcha after opening?
Matcha is delicate and sensitive to air, light, heat, and humidity. Once opened, keep your tin tightly sealed and stored in the refrigerator to preserve its vibrant green color and delicate umami flavor. Consume within 30 days of opening for optimal freshness.
What is the ideal water temperature for whisking matcha?
Avoid using boiling water, as high heat scalds the delicate tea leaves and causes bitterness. We recommend using water cooled to 160°F–175°F (70°C–80°C).
How much caffeine is in a serving of matcha?
One standard serving (1 teaspoon or ~2g) contains roughly 60–70 mg of caffeine about half the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee. Unlike coffee, matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes a calm, focused state of mind and provides sustained energy without jitters or a caffeine crash.
Can I prepare matcha without a traditional bamboo whisk?
While a traditional bamboo whisk (chasen) produces the finest froth, you can also use an electric handheld frother or shake your sifted matcha with warm water in a tightly sealed mason jar.
